| Conceived by acclaimed Los Angeles based producer/DJ Carlos
Nino(Ammoncontact, Build An Ark, Spaceways Radio), The Sound
Of L.A. 12" Series is a showcase for rising hip-hop producers
based in Los Angeles. While Los Angeles has often been overlooked
in favor of New York’s boom-bap or Houston’s syrupy
crunk, The Sound of LA showcases the tight-knit collective
of cutting-edge producers making beautiful music here- and,
more importantly- why the rest of the world should take note. Prolific, well-known producers like Cut Chemist (Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli), Madlib (Quasimoto, Madvillainy), Sa-Ra Creative Partners, and Dntel (The Postal Service, Figurine) have contributed tracks alongside the next generation of burgeoning beatsmiths: Jermajesty, Flying Lotus, Sacred and Kutmah are all seeing their first release in this series. Producers like Daedelus, Nobody, and Sach fill in the middle ground, fully representing the spectrum of producers here in Los Angeles save for your Dr. Dre's and DJ Quik's. The music is flowing and funky, described by Nino as "avant garde soul music." Some of the beats have elaborate song structure, others sound like jams in the bedroom studio, and a few are just classic instrumental hip-hop beats. Taken as a whole, they create a cohesive snapshot of Los Angeles’ sound, a patchwork of soulful and funky beats that point to a beautiful musical future. With the backing of executive producers Louie & Netty Ryan (owners of Temple Bar, Santa Monica, California), Nino compiled the tracks for the first two 12"s in this series during 2005. Temple Bar Records brought the concept to Plug Research and came to terms on how to release the project. The final product is a highly collaborative effort between all elements of the Los Angeles musical community. The photos of the artists on The Sound of LA were taken by Eric Coleman (Keepintime, Mochilla). These pictures show the diverse array of musicians featured, but more than that, they showcase the unity that has allowed LA’s musical community to flourish- and the unity that will take the music into the future. |
